About Your Character
Name: Devon Michael Wood
Alias:
Age: seventeen
Brooklyn/Upper East Side: Brooklyn
Personality:
Extremely standoffish with new people, Devon isn’t really the type of person who is invited to parties or lunch. He tends to avoid people, but he has a soft spot for the underdog. What few friends he will make in school were probably picked on at one point or another by someone else.
His personality seems a bit flat and one-dimensional at times, but underneath the rough exterior lay some complex thoughts and feelings. He’s not about to go out and write a sad song about his life, of course, but there are certain things he had difficulty coming to terms with. Still, he is very loyal once you gain his trust (which takes quite a bit of effort) and would do just about anything to help out a friend.
First impressions are crucial with him as he doesn’t tend to be very forgiving, and it takes quite a bit to change his mind after a bad first impression has been made. Devon has trouble feeling anything for the rich kids who get everything they want and throw tantrums when they don’t or feel like they’re better than everyone else because their dads own some major corporation or the other, and it’s even more difficult for him to believe that any of them are different.
Loves:
- music
- speed
- math
- science
Hates:
- cold/snow
- creative writing
- drama (both in and outside of studies)
- inflated egos
Fears:
- that his mother or siblings will be hurt
- that he’ll become his biological father
- that he won’t get into a god college
- that he will get into a good college and become like his schoolmates
My Dirty Little Secret:
Family:
Shannon Middleton – mother
Karl Middleton - stepfather
Josef Middleton – younger brother; six
Carolanne Middleton – younger sister; four
History: –
Devon grew up in Brooklyn, an only child for the great majority of his short life. At first, it was just him and his mother, and he was just fine with that. Shannon worked long hours at a diner when he was younger, leaving him to stay with his grandmother (whom he could sometimes squeeze bits of information on his biological father from) when he wasn’t in school. Shannon always wanted Devon to have the opportunities that she never did, so between her salary and the help she received from her parents (not to mention sizeable child support payments she would never mention to Devon), she worked very hard to keep him in the best schools. He was rather bright (more hardworking than anything), however, so it wasn’t too difficult to come by financial aid.
Not long after the passing of his grandmother (when he was nine), Shannon met Karl Middleton, and the next chapter in Devon’s life began to play out quite differently than he had imagined it. Having never known his father, Devon wasn’t used to sharing his mother with another person, but his hesitance to accept Karl was more than the unease of a boy who was feeling territorial.
Over the next two years, Karl and Shannon married and she took on his name. Devon, of course, was offered the opportunity to become a Middleton, but he much preferred sticking to his mother’s maiden name; it was far too early to offer any signs of acceptance. Things were easier with Karl financially, though; that much he had to admit. They moved into Karl’s long Island home for the first several years, and Devon attended school there while his mother was able to stay at home. With the birth of his brother Josef, Devon finally had to accept the fact that Karl was there to say, and so he began to play a more helpful role in the family.
Having grown accustomed to spending a great deal of time alone, Devon became very independent, so when his siblings arrived, it was a rather smooth transition to protective older brother. At the age of sixteen he began working at a grocery store close to home, saving the majority of the money he didn’t spend on his family. Still, he never seemed to be able to warm up to Karl.
A promotion at Karl’s mediocre job brought the family back once more to Brooklyn, much to Devon’s distaste. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to return to his hometown (well, it kind of was…) but rather that starting another school with an entirely new crowd of rich kids to try to make him feel as if he was less than them wasn’t his idea of a good time…
